The purpose of grain aeration is to maintain a consistent relationship between grain temperature and outside weather conditions that could cause product deterioration through fluctuating temperatures.
A grain pedestal system from McArthur Agriculture, manufactured by Martin Lishman, allows you to change the temperature of your stored grain using outside air that is a different temperature than the grain. Most of the time this will be for grain cooling, but there may be situations where you want to raise the grain’s temperature. The goal of grain aeration, therefore, is to change the temperature of the stored product economically, efficiently and to the benefit of the final product.
Grain pedestals are free-standing, metal, vertical ventilation ducts that are fitted with a centrifugal fan that sucks air through grain, cooling it to conserve quality. Any combinable crop can go through the grain cooling process directly off the grain drier, improving daily output and making grain safe for long term storage. Why Grain Cooling Is Important
Once grain is dry temperatures must be reduced as quickly as possible to avoid spoilage. The main causes of spoilage in stored grain are fungi, insects and mites. Temperatures above 15°C increase the risk of insect and mite populations developing.The HGCA Grain storage guide advises grain cooling should commence as soon as the grain comes into store.
